Planning To Travel This Holiday Season?
Don’t Forget Your Terrorism Travel Insurance.

‘Tis the season for holiday travel. Whether traveling for business or pleasure, you should consider purchasing Terrorism Travel Insurance before you leave home.

With Terrorism Travel Insurance, you can cancel and recoup the full cost of your trip if you cancel it  because an act of terrorism occurred at a destination on you itinerary. Coverage usually begins at midnight on the purchase date of the insurance and covers you up to the date of departure.

Terrorism Travel Insurance is a smart idea for:

  • frequent flyers
  • cruise line program members
  • business travelers
  • students traveling abroad
  • people who travel often to weekend or summer homes

Coverage Terms Vary

Insurance companies have very specific  rules regarding what circumstances are covered under terrorism travel insurance coverage. For instance, one particular insurer pays for a cancellation if a terrorist attack occurs in the city to which you are traveling within 30 days of your trip. If this occurs and you cancel your trip, the carrier will reimburse you for your airline tickets and nonrefundable hotel costs. If you are already traveling, the carrier will pay the extra cost to get you back home.

Threats Not Covered

You can only recoup the cost of your trip if the city involved in the attack is on your itinerary and a terrorist event actually occurs. The threat of terrorism is not usually covered by terrorism travel insurance even if the threat causes major delays and cancellations to your flight plans.

Our Recommendation

NIA’s Personal Services Division usually recommends a Fireman's Fund travel policy called "Prestige Destinations" to its clients. “’Prestige Destinations’ offers year-round coverage, which is very beneficial for frequent flyers. The cost of this particular policy runs from $325 - $450 a year and aside from offering trip cancellation coverage due to terrorism, it also includes emergency medical transportation, baggage protection, and rental car protection,” says Rick Bingham VIP Personal Services Division at The NIA Group and Kornreich-NIA.
